Novel modifiers and modification technologies have been developed for polyamides and polyolefines such as polypropylene and have found new applications in areas so far reserved for halogenated materials like auto interiors Polyamide impact modification with grafted EPM and EPDM rubbers is a well known subject. New ionomer modifiers and grafted ethylene copolymers have been developed providing superior impact strength at low temperatures. Newly developed processes are allowing the production of low density grafted ethylene octene copolymers which are providing superior impact toughness at low temperatures. This paper provides fundamental insight into the selection of the best suited modifier for PA6 and PA66 modification. Whereas for PA66 it is important to have a modifier with a high MAH graft level and low glass transition temperature, graft level is only of minor importance for PA6. Higher graft level and higher toughener loading in PA66 and 6 usually increase viscosity and reduce flow of the final product. Apart from modifying the impact strength of polymers, higher loadings of modifiers can also be used to modify the overall mechanical or forming properties of polymers. This is done in the so called proprietary ETP-TPO technology by DuPont where the properties of TPO (Thermoplastic polyolefin - a PP-EPDM blend) are modified to the extent that viscosity and thermoformability is increased through the addition of high levels of ionomers and epoxy functionalised compounds to
