Résumé
Swiss archaeologist Otto Hauser is introduced, followed by details on the discovery and rescue of the skeletons from Le Moustier (1908) and Combe Capelle (1909) in southwest France. Because Hauser was debt-ridden, he demanded the extraordinary sum of 160,000 Marks as the sale price. Using numerous archival sources, the article is a first detailed account of the sale circumstances, reasons and the process, which led up to the purchase by the Berlin Völkerkunde-Museum. The story development includes persons involved in the purchase, in the money fund-raising as well as the contradicting expert opinions regarding actual scientific, financial and the national worth value. Such controversial background unfolds with adverse attitudes expressed by Trott zu Solz, then Minister of Culture, the Imperial House, the Conservative Party leader, Ernst von Heydebrand and the Lasa, the Press and the interested public. An initial story on the role of Hauser's bank, Zündel & Co., in Schaffhausen, his quarrels with the firm, the bank's insolvency and subsequent developments are extensively described. An ensuing, decisive role which the patent attorney, Dr. Bruno Alexander-Katz of Görlitz, affected the skeletons' final purchase is covered. Katz's derisive treatment by the Minister of Culture, by the Berlin museum, and the long repayment procedure to Katz, who had fronted a sum of money to the museum and which was delayed until the end of the year 1918. This purchase of the skeletons in itself
