Source analysis of the auditory brainstem response using the dipole localizing method

We used the dipole localizing method (DLM) to analyze the grand averaged auditory brainstem response (ABR). The five major waves of the ABR were analyzed and classified into one of two groups based on the characteristics of its equivalent dipole. One group comprised waves I, II and IV, whose dipoles varied in size and direction and did not localize during the analysis period. The other group consisted of waves III and V, whose dipoles were stable, that is, they appeared at the same location with the same size and direction for at least a 0.25 msec period. The difference in the temporal dynamics of the dipoles between the two groups is critical for understanding the origin of each wave. The dipoles of the unstable group may not have represented synaptic potentials generated in the brainstem auditory pathway and therefore, their origins were uncertain. The stable group, dipoles of waves III and V, corresponded to the approximate location of the superior olive and the inferior colliculus, respectively. The orientation and the stability of the dipoles support the speculation that wave III reflects synaptic potential in the superior olives and wave V reflects synaptic potential in the inferior colliculus.
