Résumé
The Union of Uzhorod (1646) restored communion between an Orthodox Ruthenian community and the Roman Catholic Church. Its heirs are Byzantine Catholics, now organized into ten eparchies in Europe, Canada, and the United States. In light of the Balamand Statement's repudiation of uniatism, this essay raises questions about how Eastern churches in union with Rome should be understood and what their mission in the immediate future should be. Discussions of uniatism have suffered from two fallacies: a positivism that defines Eastern Catholic churches solely in terms of the immediate historical conditions that attended their acts of union, and a determinism that limits these communities by ethnicity or geography. Byzantine Catholicism is more than liturgically different from Roman Catholicism and more than jurisdictionally distinct from Orthodoxy. A model of communion urged, respecting the bonds that link Byzantine Catholics to both groups but also recognizing the organic developments of 350 years of Catholic union. Successfully inculturated in their Eastern European matrix, Ruthenian Byzantine Catholics now face the challenge of inculturation in new circumstances around the world as they claim an active role in the evangelization of all peoples.
