Biochemical and biological studies on some tea trees (Melaleuca spp.) essential oils

The present study was conducted to differentiate between the tea-trees species: Melaleuca armillaris, M. ericifolia, M leucadendron and M styphelioides and to envisage the effect of their leaf essential oils on the growth of some microorganisms. The fingerprint region in IR spectra (below 1500 cm-1) for each pair (M. styphelioides, M. ericifolia and M leucadendron, M. armillaris) of essential oils were identical. Therefore, this region can be used to differentiate between M. styphelioides or M. ericifolia and M leucadendron, M. armillaris plants. GLC analyses data show that M. ericifolia contains 98.5% ethyl eugenol. 1,8-cineole (34.3%) and terpinene-4-ol (39.1%) are characteristic components of M armillaris. Melaleuca leucadendron is characterized by the presence of a high content of α-terpinol (34.7%) while M styphelioides contains caryophyllene (50%) and methyl eugenol (26.6%) in remarkable levels. Preliminary screening of the antimicrobial activity of M. styphelioides, M. ericifolia, M. leucadendron and M armillaris essential oils against some pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms representing Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts were performed using a filter paper disc agar method. The results demonstrate that the degree of the microbial inhibition is largely dependent on the tea-tree oil species.
