Résumé
Zohara Levyatov (1926-1948) joined the Palmach in 1946 and was posted to Kibbutz Ein-Harod. At that time she met Shmuel Kaufman (1927-1947), and love bloomed between them. When, on his last day in service, Shmulik was killed in a training accident, Zohara was hurled into deep depression. In September 1947 she went to the USA where she began medical studies, and in January 1948 she joined a flight training course in California. In June 1948 she completed the course with distinction and returned to the Israel Defense Forces as a pilot. On the morning of 3 August 1948 she was killed in a tragic take-off accident. In the legacy of the 1948 generation the story of Zohara Levyatov has an exclusive, unique status. The basic motifs of classical myth merge in this narrative - tragic fate, everlasting love, and the struggle for the values of faith. Under these special circumstances the question arises whether the narrative of Zohara's life and death is a story 'bigger than life' which can be defined as a myth, and if this is so - why?
