An economical earthquake/hurricane resistant ferrocement school building

Résumé
Because of the shortage of educational spaces in Mexico and in many other developing countries, a project was undertaken to design and build a ferrocement structure for a school consisting of three classrooms, one of them with adequate installations to be used as a demonstration laboratory, a small office with a store-room, and sanitary services for boys and girls. On the basis of previous experience, a durable, economical and strong monolithic building with a semielliptical roof was made. It has appropriate acoustic insulation between classrooms, as well as thermal insulation on the roof to maintain a pleasant temperature. The site chosen for a secondary school was in an isolated community of 900 inhabitants situated in the mountains surrounding the valley of Oaxaca. As the entire building is made with a monolithic structure, it has excellent resistance to earthquakes and hurricanes.
