Résumé
The purpose of this essay is to analyze philosophical and cultural arguments that are used to support complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). One line of reasoning, based on postmodern relativism, is that the existence of an objective reality has been overthrown by quantum physics and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Therefore, all health care practices are socially-modeled and equally valid. This argument inappropriately applies concepts that concern atomic particles to social and biological sciences. Another line of reasoning, based on vitalist philosophy, holds that the reductionist, materialist approach of biomedicine ignores mind-body interactions and the existence of universal healing energies that can be mobilized to restore health. This assertion has no basis in fact. A third argument is that culturally competent health care requires acceptance of alternative therapies. Familiarity with other cultures is essential for effective communication with patients, but it does not require use of traditional folk remedies. These philosophical and cultural arguments are illogical and unconvincing Physicians need to provide guidance about CAM, but academic centers should maintain standards of scholarship, and they should not «integrate» alternative therapies into their training and practice.
