A new hydrophylic antioxidant from Tamarindus indica
Object A high molecular weight part of Tamarindus indica seed husk extract containing purified natural complex of branched polysaccharide with polyphenolic components (Polyant-T) was evaluated for its antioxidant efficiency. Experimental methods Total radical-rapping antioxidant potential (TRAP) measurement, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) quenching method, estimations of protective effects against phospholipid peroxidation in the presence of transient metal ions and against sebum lipid peroxidation in vivo were performed for activity assessment. Observations The evaluation of antioxidant effectivity revealed nearly as good effect as ascorbic acid at reducing stable DPPH radical. Resultant TRAP value was ful ly comparable to Trolox. Antioxidant at concentrations over 0.05% lowered the rate of OH radical-induced phospholipid peroxidation by more than 90%. At 0.1% concentration, it lowered the rate of UVA-induced phospholipid peroxidation in the presence of 2-4% titandioxide down to 20%. In vivo tests revealed a considerably decreased peroxiclation of sebum lipids after repeated several-day application followed by 15 MED of UVA/B radiation. Conclusion The new antioxidant from Tamarindus indica displays a significant activity in both in vitro and in vivo systems. It maintains its antioxidant activity in the presence of transient metal ions as well and therefore it is advantageous for usage especially In colour cosrnetics and sunscreens.
