Résumé
Introduction. Seric concentration of uric acid, and its urinary excretion is increased in newborns; the aim of this work was to establish the relationship between uric acid crystaluria (UAC), uricosuria (U), and urinary pH (UpH) in a group of newborns. Material and methods. This is a cross sectional, observational study carried on in a second level hospital in Yucatan (a southeast state of Mexico), from March 2001 to February 2002. Healthy newborn, 37 to 42 weeks of gestational age, weighing 2 500 to 4 000 g, of any gender, and fed with breast milk, were included; UAC, U, and UpH were determined. Student's t test, and Spearman test were used in the statistical analysis. Results. From 65 newborn studied, 44 were males; 7 presented UAC, no difference was found when U and UAC were contrasted (1.34 ± 0.92 mg/mg vs 1.54 ± 0.69 mg/mg; P > 0.05) but when compared with UpH a difference was noted (5.5 ± 0.37 vs 6.49 ± 0.78, P < 0.05); no association between UAC and U (rS = -0.08, P > 0.05) was observed; the rS between UAC and UpH was -0.41 (P = 0.001). Conclusion. No association between UAC and uricosuria was observed in our group of newborns; UpH was associated in 16% to UAC; U was higher than those informed by other authors.
