Résumé
Antofagasta is located in the north zone of Chile, in Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world, and is 1500 km from the capital, Santiago. The principal activity in the areas around the city is mining. There are several cupper mines, which contribute substantially to the country's wealth. The soil conditions of Antofagasta suggest that the city is to certain extent protected against seismic events. Recent significant earthquakes caused little material damage to the city and the areas affected were concentrated in specific zones. However Antofagasta's seismic history does not go back far enough to suggest that the city is safe. The previous strongest motion (Mw∼9) occurred the last century (1877), therefore the 1995 earthquake (Mw=8.1) should be considered as a precursor to the end of a large seismic gap [10]. The type of construction in Antofagasta is very sismilar to that found the throughout the rest of country; differing only in the quality of materials employed. Construction is regulated however by several codes regarding both analysis and design. The Chilean Seismic Code is relatively old [3], its first version was approved in 1972. It has been updated twice (1993 and 1996), but maintains the chilean practice of the use of adequate shear walls density based design, which has always produced satisfactory results. The countermeasure employed in the case of a severe seismic event have been developed organically by the local emergency services. However, i
